The Nakuru public health office has cleared 59 stalls for food hawkers in the area. Chief public health officer Samuel Kingori said they inspected 136 stalls and only approved those that met the requirements. “We have cleared 51 out of the 120 stalls in Mashamba and eight out of 16 stalls at Gikomba market. The two are major complex food preparing zones in the area. They were able to meet our standards regarding the cleanliness and the proper waste disposal. The inspected stalls can now operate as normal,” he said. Kingori said they had charged 185 residents with contravening the current food ban in the area. “We insist that the food ban will continue until the area is declared cholera-free. This will help us in controlling and eradicating the disease in the county,” he said. According to Kingori, the disease has so far claimed 16 lives with 207 having been treated for it. He said that the area was improving in the cholera management. “We have so far managed to control the disease as we have not had any cases of the disease outbreak for the last 48 hours. We have managed to put the disease under control.” “However, we can only declare the area cholera free if we do not have any reported case in 10 days,” he said.
