The council was reacting to a claim made by the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo that the increased incidences of terror attacks over the last on month have something to do with a local problem.

Mandera Governor Ali Ibra said that the IG was not keen in fighting terror and had not carried proper investigations on the previous terror incidences.

“There has been 15 cases of terrorism in Mandera yet none of the cases has been investigated to conclusion,” the governor said.

The security of the country has been entrusted on clueless individuals who have been giving irrational statements to cover up on their incapability to fight terrorism. They are unable to determine the linkages of the insecurity in the country,” he quipped.

Ibra cited the incidence when 10 explosives were discovered in the town, saying that police were downplaying the issue.

“The level of security response when there is an attack is wanting. Mandera is a gateway and when attacks start in the country they start from here. They should improve their system as soon as possible,” he added

Chair of the council, Isaac Ruto, said that security officials need to be given more resources.

“We are tired of justification by police heads on why they are not equipping the police better. We also know that the police in the country are not safe. We are shocked that attacks are now following a normal pattern and even the attempted assassination of the Mandera governor is not a good sign. It needs more attention that it is currently being given,” said Ruto.

They were speaking at a press conference at Lake Naivasha country club.
