Inmates at the Naivasha Prisons School have appealed to well-wishers to supply them with stationery and other learning materials.
The inmates claim they did not have any writing materials and often had to rewrite on old books.
“We cannot write anything because of lack of writing materials. Sometimes we are even forced to just listen to the teacher,” said Fidelis Onyango, an inmate.
He added that they often had to share pens, pencils, rubbers and rulers among more than five prisoners.
“It really becomes hard because we have to share a pen among ourselves. In some cases we leave one person to listen to the teacher dictate after which we all copy from him,” he added
He cited that they also did not have enough text books to refer to for further studies.
Kaberia Itaaru, one of their teachers, affirmed that the inmates often had problems with getting books to refer to. He cited that many of the books were tattered and in poor conditions.
“We do not have internet access for them to research on various topics. Hence, we have to rely only on the hard copies which are often in a deplorable condition,” added Itaaru.
