In a tweet on Tuesday, the organisation said that it had been honoured to host the courageous workers at their offices where a round table discussion was held.

"What an honour and privilege to host the Maasai Mara University whistleblowers at our offices today for a round table discussion as we celebrate Human Rights Day. They risked it all to safeguard truth and justice! We salute you, " Amnesty Kenya wrote on Twitter.

In an exclusive expose aired on Citizen Television, the workers revealed how top officials at the higher education institution stole money with impunity.

Spenser Sankale, the institution's chief accountant, emerged as the hero of the expose as he is the one who called Citizen Television and blew the lid on the scandal that left Kenyans in shock.

Adversely mentioned in the expose was Maasai Mara's vice-chancellor Professor Mary Walingo. Prof Kitche Magak took over in an acting capacity as investigations continued.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) descended on the institution after the expose to start investigations.

In the interview with Citizen, Sankale said that he had had to change the way he led his life.

“I have been okay,  I have been at work actually but a lot of things have changed in my life. I can’t walk the way I used to walk. There are threats and intimidation, especially at work. It is mostly a security issue for me whenever I am out. I walk in the malls and most of the people recognize me. It is a kind of new way of living but it is something I was prepared for, " he said.
