President Emmanuel Macron has reacted to a comment by Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro that appeared to demean the French head of state's wife Brigette.
Jair Bolsonaro mocked Brigette in a reply to a Facebook post that made use of photo's of the two president's wife in a bid to contrast their beauty.
"Now you understand why Macron is persecuting Bolsonaro?" the post read.
The Brazilian president reacted with, "Do not humiliate (him)... man, ha ha."
Mr Macron condemned his Brazilian counterparts deriding comment on his wife, describing it as very disrespectful.
"He said very disrespectful things about my wife. I have great respect for the Brazilian people and can only hope they soon have a president who is up to the job, " Mr Macron told reporters after being asked about Bolsonaro's words.
He went on to say that women in Brazil were ashamed by the insulting comment of their president.
The two leaders have been locked in a vicious war of words after the French president described the Amazon fire in Brazil as an 'international crisis' and singled out the Bolsonaro administration for criticism for not doing enough to deal with it.
Jair Bolsonaro has strongly rejected suggestions that his administration has not done enough to quell the fire as he he proclaimed his 'profound love' for the forest.
