Farmers in Sanchngwan, Molo sub county have been challenged to aim for regional markets for their produce.
Dr Samson Odindo Onyango from Egerton University said the farmers, mostly from rural areas should aim at selling their produce in other African countries instead of relying on domestic markets only.
Speaking in Sanchangwan trading center when he presided over the launch of Kaiboi Farmers Self Help Group, Odindo said Egerton University was willing to recommend its students on attachment to the groups to help them improve their operations.
"Our students are highly qualified in agriculture and community development and can help the groups improve on their activities," he said.
He said Kenya depends on small scale farmers to feed itself and urged the youth to venture into farming activities and not to rely on being employed by the government.
The group chairperson Daniel Irungu said the aim of forming the group was to bring the 'sleeping minds' together and achieve their goals.
"We have come together to wake up our sleeping minds for our own benefits," said Irungu.
