Youth in Kisii County have a reason to smile after the county government pledged to offer jobs in a road maintenance programme initiated by the county.

Speaking on Tuesday during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Gusii Stadium, Governor James Ongwae said that 72 kilometres of murram roads were undergoing construction and that the youth will be involved in the maintenance of the roads.

"Due to the forecasted El-nino rains, we are likely to experience difficulties in road transport. For that reason, we have identified various places in Kisii town and other wards that need to be dealt with quickly," he said.

Governor Ongwae added that his government has partnered with the Africa Development Bank to include interior roads connecting to main roads in the ongoing road maintenance programme.

The bank is currently the funder of the Ahero-Kisii-Isebania road construction works.

Roads that will benefit from the maintenance programme include Oyugis-Rioma, Nyakoe-Nyatieko, Nyachege-Ogembo and Suneka-Motonto-Egetuki.
