Plans are underway to celebrate 50 years anniversary of Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) in the country. Cotu deputy general secretary Benson Okwaro said the celebrations will mark the achievements made so far by the union. Okwaro said they have set aside May 1 this year to stage the celebrations at Uhuru Park. He announced that there will be simultaneous celebrations in major towns like Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret and Nakuru. “We are already set for the celebrations and I want to tell Kenyans that there will be similar celebrations in towns near their areas,” he said. Speaking in Kisumu at Tom Mboya Labour College when he toured the facility ahead of the second Devolution Conference, Okwaro said they have sent an invitation to President Uhuru Kenyatta to grace the occasion. He said more invitation has been extended to elected leaders and Kenyans to join Cotu in the celebrations. Okwaro said the union was formed at independence and there were great minds who came up with its formation. He said they will take the opportunity during the celebrations to honour some departed Kenyans like Tom Mboya who were very instrumental in the formation of the giant union. “We must honour our heroes who find it important to form this union and we will use the occasion to mention their names,” he said.
