Kibera parents over the weekend still played the role of tutors to their children despite the teachers having suspended their strike.
They had to conduct tuition for their children even after the teachers unions asked their members to resume duty on Monday.
According to Ruth Akoth, she has been conducting tuition for her boys where she used to give them homework and would return home in the evening to mark them and do revision.
Akoth who runs a shop at Laini Saba area in Kibera is positive that the boys will perform well in their end of year exams despite the teachers strike.
“We do not have to fully depend on teachers to educate our children, as parents we should help them to achieve their dreams. We can only achieve it by helping them know how to solve problems which are hard for them to solve on their own,” said Akoth on Sunday.
Mike Ouma, a father of three, has also been giving homework to his children to help them revise effectively.
Ouma who runs an electronics shop along the railway line said he does not want his children to keep playing along the line since it can cause them injuries and even death.
“I don’t want them to be idle or just play; I want to see them read. Education is all I want for them,” said Ouma.
