Security in Garissa county has been a major concern in recent times especially after the April 2015 terror attack on Garissa University College that claimed over 147 lives.
The known terror group, Al Shabaab, has been allegedly hiring youths from the North Eastern region and other parts; their main agenda being to execute terror attacks.
Garissa county boasts of several tourist attraction sites and also serves as a major trading centre of the North-Eastern region.
However, most potential investors cannot comfortably invest in a security prone area. That is why the launch of Modika barracks in Garissa county is a major boost to the social, economic and political development.
Being the first-ever barracks in the region, it is housing dozens of trained soldiers who will be aiding other security agencies in the region to beef up security within the county.
The barracks is now housing three army fighting units and three support units. It is an initiative to modernize the training and skills of the Kenya Defence Forces.
The barracks is vital because it will give locals confidence about their security.
It is a sigh of relieve because terrorists will definitely have a hard time to go on with their operations around Garissa and North Eastern.
Besides, cases of livestock theft in Garissa and its neighbouring counties have recently been rampant.
The barracks will play a huge role in reducing such cases.
