Residents of Limuru town have expressed concern over the surge in the number of street families in the urban centre.

Traders in the town criticised the county government for doing little to address the problem, saying the families were a nuisance to residents and visitors.

"It is like there is a new group moving to the streets every day. This has left us wondering if the county government is doing anything to ensure Limuru town is free of street families," said John Muchiri, a businessman.

David Mwangi, a hotel attendant, said: "Sometimes you may find at the doorstep of your premises in the morning and when you try to chase them away they don't badge. In fact sometimes they become violent forcing one to call for help."

They said some of them are engaging in criminals activities such as muggings and burglary.

"If the Kiambu County government does not do something to get rid of the street children, the economy of Limuru will definitely be adversely affected. They should be removed from the streets and taken to children's homes or to a rehabilitation centre," said Mary Wangeci, a business lady in the town.

They further urged the county assembly to come up with laws on how to solve the menace.
