Nakuru residents have expressed concern over the quality of meat being distributed in the area. They expressed fears that the meat, which killed four people this week, might still be in circulation in the area. They cited that the increased cases of rotten meat being captured by health officials were now worrying. Speaking to the press in Shabab area, the residents accused the Ministry of Public Health of neglecting information given to them from the members of the public. “We would like to know what happens to unhygienic meat that has been captured by the Ministry. How is it destroyed and who oversees its destruction?” asked Jane Njeri. Njeri cited that the meat might have ended up in butcheries or in supermarkets packed and stored in the deep frozen fridges. “Our informers claim that the meat was distributed to various butcheries. The only solution is to try and track all the meat and stop it,” she added. Peter Mungai claimed that the mode of transportation for meat in the town was pathetic. “Meat in this area is transported on bicycles or even carts. In some cases the men carry them on their backs. The health department should look into that,” he cited. Nakuru county public health Officer Samuel Kingori cited that they would look into the matter. “We want to ensure the public that we will confiscate any meat that is not fit for human consumption and ensure that the one being distributed is of the right quality,” he said.
