Ruiru MP Esther Gathongo has cautioned young people in the constituency against indulging in drugs.
Addressing various youth groups in Ruiru town on Sunday, the MP urged the youth to use their free time in activities that will better their lives.
Gathongo observed that many young people are being lured into drug abuse and crime a situation she said has hindered development of the constituency.
“I want to ask the youth in Ruiru to desist from activities that will not add value to their lives and instead contribute to development," she said.
The MP said that drug abuse and unemployment are the pertinent issues facing the youth in the constituency adding that though the constituency has initiated various programmes to mentor the youth, the county and the national government should do more.
She added that the youth need to be sensitised on the effects of drug abuse and crime which she said has seen many of them either injured or killed.
“The number of youth being killed and arrested on suspicion of taking part in crime is on the rise,” she said.
She added that parents have neglected their roles a move that has seen many youths go astray and engage in all manners of crime.
Ms Gathongo urged parents in the area to monitor the activities of their children this festive season noting that many of them take advantage of the festivities to engage in social evil.
