The additional responsibility was handed to the vocal trade unionist during a conference in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Wednesday.

The election was done during the opening of the 14th International Labour Organization (ILO) meeting for the African continent.

In his acceptance speech, Atwoli expressed gratitude for the confidence and trust the group has shown in him by entrusting him with the job.

“I remain committed to fighting for social justice for working men and women on the continent and beyond,” said the firebrand trade unionist.

International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) President Brussels Ayubba lauded Atwoli as a committed leader, who has demonstrated his passion for fighting for workers.

"He has demonstrated passion to the ideals of the working men and women and whose fight for social justice remains unmatched,” he said.

Back at home, Atwoli has also been engaging in political issues, especially the 2022 presidential succession debate.

For instance, he has been against President Uhuru Kenyatta completely exiting politics after his retirement from the presidency in 2022.

He has been pushing for constitutional amendments; expansion of the executive to include among others, a Prime Minister.
