27 inmates at the Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu County are among the over 1 million candidates sitting for the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

Six are female while the rest are male candidates. Zaituni Onyango is among the candidates sitting for the exams at the Prison.

She was handed a life sentence after being found guilty of conniving with her husband to procure an abortion. “I intend to score more than 300 marks so that I join form one next year,” she said.

The convict hopes to become a nurse in future.

The director of education at the prison Emmanuel Tindi said he believes the candidates will score good marks, because of the adequate time they put in during preparations

“I am very sure that we are going to beat last year’s mean score of 278. The first candidate had 353 marks. This time round, I am expecting a mean score of above 300,” he said.

KCPE exams kicked off on Tuesday across the country. The exams will end on Thursday.
