Pupils from different schools in Kibera resumed classes on Monday joined by other schools that are spread across the country. This was after a long break caused by the teachers strike.
Teachers all over the nation went on strike due to poor payment which took over a month. The five weeks strike came to an end on Saturday and teachers have resumed duty.
Speaking to HiviSasa, pupils expressed their joy of going back to school with many saying that they will work hard not to repeat classes.
Winnie Akinyi of Olympic Primary School in Kibera says that she is thankful to the Kenya National Union of Teachers and Teacher Service Commission for settling their differences and enabling teachers to go back to school.
Richard Misiko also expressed his joy of being back to class. The class six pupil added that their teachers are hard working and therefore he believes that they will not fail.
“Our syllabus will soon be covered. Even though we have missed classes, our teachers are very hardworking and am sure they will cover the syllabus before the end of the term,’ he said.
Richard also urged the government to pay the teachers good salaries in order to avoid the strikes as they have become rampant leading to the students suffering unnecessarily.
