The Director of Social Affairs in the Ministry of East African Affairs Agnes Sila have the rising unemployment in Nyamira County.

Addressing a youth stakeholders conference organised by the county government of Nyamira on Tuesday, Sila said there was need for the two levels of government to speak in one voice in addressing the challenges that face the youth as their issues are cross cutting and require a concerted approach to address.

She described the high unemployment level and lack of skills among youth as key contributors to lack of development and insecurity in the country.

Sila said due to unemployment, many youth have become frustrated leading them to criminality.

She said the frustrated youth are being radicalised, leading to high levels of insecurity.

The meeting brought together county executive officers in charge of youth and county directors of youth affairs and gender.

Sila called for a collective, decisive and targeted approach from the two levels of the government, as well as the private sector, to address the challenges hindering the youth from actualising their potential.

She urged county governments to mainstream youth issues in their strategies, noting that the national government had prioritised youth affairs and put in place a legal framework.
