One man, four men all elbowing each other for his attention. This is the situation President Uhuru Kenyatta finds himself in even as his presidential term nearly comes to an end.
With over two years to the next general election, the Uhuru succession politics are slowly gaining momentum And as always, the incumbent may have a hand on his choice of a successor.
With this in mind, Uhuru finds himself surrounded by the country's political heavyweights, all keen for his "anointing hand" and probably declare them "Tosha".
Uhuru's dalliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga is in public domain. As to whether succession politics are part of their agenda remains a mystery. Their relationship has elicited mixed reactions with politicians opposed to their handshake calling on the President to abandon his deal with the former Prime Minister.
Recently, Kandara MP Alice Wahome took the handshake duo head-on and Kapseret's Oscar Sudi followed suit.
Then there is Deputy President William Ruto, the supposed natural successor of President Kenyatta as per their agreement in 2013 when they teamed up ahead of that year's election which they won. However, since their 2017 re-election in 2017, the narrative has changed.
Dr Ruto allies believe the President may be shortchange him especially after the Uhuru-Raila handshake.
On the other hand, there is Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi. Lately, he has enjoyed a close relationship with the President. His allies led by Lugari MP Ayub Savula claim there is a plan for Mudavadi and Uhuru to form an alliance ahead of 2022. Whether the claims are true or not is another story.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has already pledged his loyalty to the President will the hope of political support in the 2022 polls which he has vowed to indulge in as a presidential candidate.
For now, only Uhuru knows about his succession plan. But for Raila, Ruto, Mudavadi and Kalonzo, the scramble continues.
