A village in Masaba North District in Nyamira County is mourning after a 72-year-old woman was killed by unknown people on Saturday night.
Keroka Township chief Kennedy Ndege told reporters that a gang of suspected robbers raided the granny's compound at night and demanded for money from her.
They are then said to have slashed the woman, identified as Teresa Kwamboka, with a machete after she told them that she had no money.
Ndege said the thugs also attacked the woman's neighbours who had responded to her screams, seriously injuring one of them.
"Efforts by her neighbours to fend off the attackers were futile as the robbers also attacked them and thereafter escaped on foot," said Ndege, adding that the suspected robbers made away with 10 plastic chairs.
Ndege said the woman's body had been taken to Gucha District Hospital mortuary as police commence investigations to nab the assailants.
There has been a surge of criminals activities in the area in the recent past, with several traders in Keroka township being killed in robberies.
Residents claim there is a group of people masquerading as police, who are harassing them, and have expressed concern over failure by security officers to arrest them.
