Residents of Nyamira county have been urged to be extremely careful when choosing leaders at the county level to avoid subsequent complaints about alleged poor leadership and corruption at the county units.
While addressing residents of Bosamaro ward, veteran politician and activist Mrs. Cathrene Nyamato urged area residents to be careful when choosing MCAs and the governor in the 2017 election.
Nyamato said that many residents were unaware of the importance of decentralisation of power and only realised it when it was too late since it was after the 2013 polls.
“I think we have learnt that as residents, county governments are essential in taking development to the next level. I wish to remind you to choose carefully in subsequent elections in order to avoid persistent complaints of poor leadership,” she said.
Mrs. Nyamato said that choosing Members of County Assembly who were aware of their roles and a development minded governor would help the county make huge strides in development.
“I am not saying that the current leadership is incapable but I think a number of them have let us down. We must be careful not to elect people who are not able to appreciate the enormous responsibility bestowed upon them. The county governments if taken seriously will solve some of our dependence problems in the name of poverty and ignorance,” she added.
She said that the county government should be seen as an opportunity to serve people and not an avenue for looting public resources.
