County Youth Officer Charity Githinji has cautioned the youth against engaging in unprotected sex as they risked contracting the HIV virus and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Ms Githinji said girls also risked getting pregnant early.

She said abstinence was the surest prevention against sexually transmitted infections.

Ms Githinji was speaking during the commemoration of this years’ World Aids Day held at Lari sub county grounds.

She said unprotected sex contributed to the youth contracting the HIV virus, and other sexually transmitted diseases including Hepatitis B, Herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis.

She noted that unprotected sex among high school and university students could lead to unwanted pregnancies forcing them to become mothers or fathers before their time.

“For students in secondary school and university, it is possible to have a baby before time so there is a big reason to be careful until you are ready to raise a family,” said the youth officer.

She advised youth to follow church teachings on abstinence noting that it was a sure method of protection oneself against the HIV/Aids virus.

She said condoms  should come as a second option in the fight against the scourge.

This year’s World Aids Day campaign theme is ‘Getting to Zero, End Aids by 2030.'
