Drug peddlers operating in Nyamira County have been warned against engaging in the illegal business.
Speaking during a dinner meeting at Guardian Hotel organised by the county government of Nyamira after Mashujaa day celebrations, County Commissioner Josephine Onunga said she has instructed the police and provincial administration chiefs to crack a whip on the culprits.
She said the crackdown will commence immediately following complaints by members of the public that cases of drug peddling were on the rise in the county.
“As your county commissioner, I take all information I get from people seriously. I hear they (drug barons) are now in upcountry and to be precise in our county. I have already instructed police officers and administration chiefs to launch a crackdown. Nyamira is a drug free zone,” Mrs Onunga said.
According to her, bhang, heroine and cocaine that are allegedly synonymous in the region will be targeted by the officers with suspects expected to be arrested and arraigned in court.
“Even the head of state gave us a go ahead and this crackdown is unstoppable. We don’t care how influential those coordinating the peddling are, all we want is sanity and save our future generations from perishing,” she added.
She urged area residents to be vigilant to combat the menace that was previously anonymous with county residents.
“We must work together as a team if at all we want to combat this menace. It’s a new problem hence citizens will be influential in terms of giving information to the police. We have to fight it together,” said the County Commissioner.
