Speaking in Githunguri on Thursday, Karanja Shutha, a Community Leader in Githunguri has said that teachers are being fairly remunerated, just like other civil servants in the same grades as theirs.

“This issue of teachers' strike is worrying. I know of people with degrees in the Public Service in the same cadre with some teachers who earn less but they are not in the streets,” said Karanja.

Karanja added that the review of teachers' salaries should be based on an individual teacher's performance.

“This blanket review of teachers' salaries must be stopped forthwith. We cannot have teachers who produce very poor results because they miss classes attending personal matters lining up the streets to demand bigger salaries,” added Karanja.

He said that teachers should have their salaries reviewed upwards based on merit, based on the performance of their schools.

The teachers’ strike entered its fifth day, with the teachers’ unions and the government playing hard ball.
