After completion of the registration exercise for the disabled in Gatundu North sub-county, the local administration has been challenged to start a sacco that will help improve their livelihoods.

Speaking in Gituamba on Monday, their spokesman Simon Murimi, urged the sub-county government to liaise with the national government to create a kitty that will facilitate the disabled start their own sacco.

“Now that our number is known, we are urging the constituency leadership to set aside some cash that will enable us start a sacco for the disabled. We can grow economically through investment but there has to be somewhere to start from,” he said.

Murimi urged the constituency leadership to further consider the disabled in the disbursement of Uwezo Fund, citing it as the only way to help them start projects that will in return create employment and increase their self-esteem.

He lauded the leadership for facilitating the registration process that took one month.

During the registration, 1,689 disabled persons were enlisted.

The spokesman commended the work done by assistant chiefs in the registration exercise, terming them as a pillar behind revealing the hidden disabled children.

He, however, castigated some parents who were hiding their children with deformities for fear of being stigmatised.

“We have spoken with the constituency leadership and the commissioner has assured us that any parent found hiding such children will be arrested and taken to court for denying them their right,” he added.
