Speaking on Saturday, the veteran politician declared support for Aukot's push to have a leaner representation, stressing on the need for a lighter tax burden on Kenyans.

He opposed the other one being pushed by his ally and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga which seeks to introduce more seats.

"Mimi nasimama upande wa kurekebisha katiba kama tutawaondolea wakenya matatizo. Nawaunga mkono hawa wa kupunguza mizigo, lakini nataka waondoe kabisa mzigo. (I support constitutional changes that will spare Kenyans. I support the Punguza Mizigo team, but I would suggest they completely remove the burden)," Koigi said during an interview on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening.

The former MP who in the run-up to the 2017 polls crossed over to Raila's ODM party from the Jubilee side based his opposition to the ODM's push for a referendum on its proposal for more executive seats.

He further noted that he is as well not aware of any constitutional amendments being prepared under the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), after being told that when he attempted to make his proposals to the task force when it visited Nakuru.

"Nilienda kwa BBI nikiwa tayari kutoa mapendekezo yangu kuhusu kurekebisha katiba wakasema hawaongelei mambo ya katiba. (I approached BBI team ready with my proposals but I was told there are constitutional amendment discussion)," the former assistant minister said.

It has been widely expected that the BBI formed after the famous handshake will recommend for a referendum on several issues. The team, however, is yet to present it's final report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader. It remains to be seen if it will recommend a constitutional change or not.
