A Muslim cleric has faulted the opposition for advocating for the allocation of more  funds to the counties saying it will not improve the lives of Kenyans.

The chairman of the Council of Imams and Muslim Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) in Uasin Gishu County Abubakar Bini says the increment will not be beneficial to Kenyans and will instead increase the chances for elected leaders in the counties to enrich themselves.

“We are really disappointed with the opposition's call to amend the constitution for more funds to be allocated to county government and yet what they have at the moment they are embezzling” he said

Speaking to this writer on Friday, Bini said county governments have misappropriated public funds and with the proposed increment from fifteen to forty five percent, it will be a double burden to Kenyans.

“We want the constitution to be amended so that counties may be reduced from the current forty seven to at least twelve, which will reduce the burden incurred by tax payers by over fifty percent since most of the money is used to pay workers,” he said.

He added that support for a referendum should be only for the reduction of counties which he says have been increased the burden on taxpayers who have been forced to dip digger into their pockets to fund them.
