A senior Police office has called on the county government to complete the on-going street lighting project saying that it had played a crucial role in taming crime in Nakuru.
Speaking in a stakeholder’s community participation forum organised by the Sauti Yetu Society group in conjunction with a variety of civil societies over the weekend, Kaptembwo OCS Patrick Makau noted that the project was timely and that its completion will help police officers to carry out their duties effectively.
He further accused youth in the area for not doing enough to keep themselves busy and become self-reliant with a majority of them resorting to engaging in crime.
“This time round, we are not going to rest till we ensure that these young boys engaging in criminal activities are arrested and prosecuted. Crime has no place in our modern society; work hard to live a decent life,” he advised.
According to Mr. Makau, the street lights had boosted security by ensuring that the business community is safe to and from their business premises early in the morning and late hours a time he says criminal activities was formerly prevalent in the area.
“Did the project stall or what is happening? My officers are now concentrating on patrolling within the interior parts of the slum because the market area was well lit making it hard for criminals to operate. The county government should come in and finish what it started for a safe and secured environment,” he explained.
The county government of Nakuru had partnered with the World Bank for the first phase of the project, Kenya Power and Lightening Company for the second phase and was allocated some money through the county assembly for the last and final phase of the project which is set to kick start soon.
