Amani National Congress (ANC) party Kibra parliamentary candidate Eliud Owalo on Thursday said he is a victim of the poor debt management system in the country.
Speaking during an interview on KBC radio, Owalo said he has personally been affected by mobile lending platforms, specifically Safaricom's Fuliza service.
He said he has had to deal with situations where he is kept on hold by Kibra residents, while trying to send money to people who need it in the course of his campaigns.
"Nowadays, when I want to send money to residents you hear them saying " let me give you another number, this one has Fuliza" (Siku hizi hata nikitaka kutuma pesa kwa mwananchi unasikia anasema ngoja kwanza nikupe namba nyingine, hii iko na Fuliza)," he said.
He termed this one of the issues he will be using his legislative powers to address if elected to office in the much awaited November 7 mini election, only a week away.
Owalo expressed dislike for how the platform consumes money from the borrower's account immediately it is sent.
"Effective debt management is one thing I will address in legislation and national oversight (Effective debt management ni kitu moja nitashughulikia in legislation and national oversight)," he added.
The race has attracted over 20 candidates, among them McDonald Mariga of the ruling Jubilee Party and Imran Okoth of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
