Barely a day after being set free by the court following his five days behind bars, embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has for the first time spoken since he secured his freedom.

In a warm message to Nairobi residents and Kenyans at large, Sonko wished them a happy Jamhuri Day celebrations.

" I am happy to join other Kenyans in marking 56th Jamhuri Day celebrations... Jamhuri Day reminds us the power of Independence and why it's important for everyone of us to fight for our rightful position in society and all spheres of life," Sonko said in a post on his Facebook page Thursday.

The embattled Sonko was nabbed in a dramatic arrest last Friday in Voi, just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji issued a warrant of arrest against him over alleged corrupt dealings.

He would later spend the entire weekend behind bars before being arraigned in court on Monday and charged with 19 counts of corruption. He, however, denied all charges.

On Wednesday, he was released on Sh15 million cash bail, paving way for his release -  freedom which he finally secured in the evening.

However, Governor Sonko was barred from setting foot to his office.
