A man in Seoul, South Korea has died after setting himself on fire over reasons yet to be established.
According to South Korean authorities, the man who is in his seventies set himself on fire outside the Japanese Embassy on Friday.
He later died in hospital several hours later, in what doctors said was as a result of suffering second-degree burns to the chest, face and arm.
Reports from the Jongno Fire Station indicate that he burnt himself using butane gas and 20 litres of petrol inside his car at about 3:24 am.
"It is presumed that the man, using 20 litres of gasoline and butane gas in the car, tried to set himself on fire," reads the statement as was seen by the Cable News Network (CNN).
The incident comes amid widening tension between the nations, revolving around colonial-era hostilities and worsening trade collisions.
The South Korean top court has since ruled that its citizens can proceed to sue the Japanese for imposing them to forced labour during the second world war.
Part of the trade war includes Japans announcement earlier in the month that it would tame export of memory chips and smartphones to South Korea, which has been followed by anti-Japanese demos in Seoul.
