The Machakos County government has been asked to construct a children's rescue centre to address cases of child neglect.

Ndalani Ward Administrator Titus Kaloki said cases of child neglect were on the rise.

He said a rescue centre would help the many children suffering as a result of neglect.

Speaking in Ndalani during a meeting with the chiefs, assistants and other local administrators on Tuesday, Kaloki said the neglected and orphaned children in the Yatta sub-county have been forced to seek for help from neighbouring sub-counties.

“We take children to Nyeri, Murang’a, Isiolo, Meru and Embu counties depending on spaces available in the centers and the number of children we need to rescue but we cannot rely on others forever. We need to establish ours too,” he said.

Kaloki added that the matter had been raised to the county government in 2014 but no action had been taken to establish the facility.

“Some time it is hard to identify who is the right person to deal with in the county government making it almost impossible to push for the construction of the facility but this time am taking the proposal to the county boss and I know it will be resolved,” he added.

He said boys register high numbers of neglect compared to girls in the age bracket of 4-16 years.
