Police officers in Eldoret are investigating an incident in which a second-year student at Moi University was found dead inside a lecture hall.
The body of the student, who was later identified as Japheth Mungai, had the hands tied. Kesses Sub-county Police Commander Harun Muriasi has confirmed the incident, saying that the student might have committed suicide.
The police boss said that they do not have more information on the deceased, adding that probe will continue.
“We do not have much information. We are treating it as a suicide,” Mr. Muriasi said.
The deceased’s mother Monica Mungai said that the family is shocked by the death of the student. She also faulted the management of the institution over the manner in which it is handling the case. Mungai’s mother said that they received the news of his death through social media.
The family has since asked the police to probe the matter faster so that they can know the cause of the death of the student amid speculations that he took his life.
The management of the university is yet to issue a statement on death.
The deceased’s body was transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary before an autopsy is conducted on the same.
