Livestock traders in Nyachenge market in South Mugirango sub county, Kisii county have been cautioned against buying stolen animals for slaughter. The traders have instead been advised to involve village elders as well as state and county administration officials when purchasing animals to avert cases of dealing with stolen animals.
The call comes in the wake of the rampant cases of animal theft in the area which borders Kisii and Migori counties respectively.
While addressing livestock traders, the Nyachenge market Traders Association Chairman Erastus Abuta told members to be cautious when buying animals to avert being blamed for the animal theft going on in the region.
“In this area we have already had several cases of some of our members falling victim to the criminals who sell them stolen animals with dire consequences as they end up having trouble with the law,” he said.
He called upon the residents to ensure that when buying the animals, they should ensure that the owner of the cow produces all his documents so that he can be easily traced in case of any trouble.
