At least 700,000 people in Nakuru are facing starvation following a dry spell that affected crop yields.
The worst-hit areas according to Njoro MP Joseph Kiuna are Pwani, Lare, Mauche and Naishi.
Speaking on Tuesday when he toured the affected areas in the constituency, Kiuna urged the national and Nakuru County governments to provide relief food for the affected residents.
“The situation is nearly getting out of hand and both levels of government should intervene," said Kiuna.
Residents said delayed rains affected crop yields in most parts of the county.
“We have been depending on wild fruits for survival," said Ann Wambui, a resident from Pwani.
Another resident John Mwai said delayed rains made farmers make loses as most crops dried up in gardens.
“We have been starving for the last two years following poor rains that left our crops dry," he said.
The residents said the situation had worsened where the children and elderly have borne the brunt of the effects of the drought.
“Children and old people have fallen sick due to poor diet and are malnourished,” added Mwai.
