Shocking revelations have indicated how millions of revenue were being pocketed by already the dead, under the social protection scheme project.
Sources indicate how over 14,000 payees were still on the payroll, despite the Social Protection Department having assured their removal.
The fraud was highly catalyzed by the fact that no physical presence was needed, owing to the use of ATM and bank services, through which the elderly got their stipends.
"Recently, Inua Jamii were conducted countrywide to ensure proof of life and 14,262 deceased beneficiaries were exited from the payroll," Social Protection PS Nelson Marwa stated, as quoted by Nation.
Marwa added that the Sh2,000 stipend payable to each ghost beneficiary had instead been channelled to other needy Kenyans.
According to the PS, through a previous statement, the slots found empty after audit are filled by new beneficiaries.
Statistics indicate that over One million deserving persons consisting of the elderly, orphaned and those living with disabilities got up to Sh4.47 billion during the November-December period with the payment standing at Sh2,000 monthly.
Last year saw beneficiaries grumble over delayed payments occasioned by delayed in disbursements from the treasury, in addition to the bank accounts upgrading in attempts to fight fraud.
