Thika Township ward MCA Kennedy Mwangi has revealed that plans are underway in establishing market stall sheds for the hawkers in Thika town to boost their economic activity in the area.
The hawkers had earlier risen concerned over lack of space to trade in the area and had call for the area MCA for support to rescue them from the municipal council who were terrorizing them of the daily fee which was hiked four times by the county government.
Speaking in his ward on Saturday in Madaraka Market in Thika town, the MCA said that the stall will help atleast 100 hawkers in his ward and will also enhance cleanliness and organized market in the area.
The legislator expressed his concerns over lack of space to trade which might be a reason for crimes and drug abuse due to lack of unemployment.
“Lack of employment is the main reasons for crime thus this space will help in reduction of crime and youth will now venture into businesses and create their own employment,” he said
According to the hawkers, the space will be a plus to their businesses and atleast they will hide from the town council and avoid being arraigned in the county court for breaking rules.
The proposed finance bill stated that the hawkers will have to part with Kshs 3000 monthly which according to them, they will be sometimes have to dig into their pockets to settle the bill.
The Kiambu proposed finance bill had recently caused disagreements by the stakeholders who are excessively taxed by the county government and took to the street spearheaded by the area MP Alice Ng’ang’a and other Kiambu leaders..
