Police in Nairobi are holding a man facing allegations of assaulting his pregnant wife for coming home late.
Ferdinand Geoffrey Ombulu has been in police custody since Thursday, when a Makadara Court ruled that he remains in custody for a week, pending conclusion of investigations.
He on Thursday appeared before Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga, who heard that he assaulted his wife Damaris Wanja on Tuesday last week.
The magistrate was told that the accused beat up the woman badly, breaking her limbs, and rendering her unconscious, for allegedly returning home an hour to midnight.
The prosecution accused the suspect of torturing the woman for a long period before rushing her to the Ruaraka Health Center, before he was handed over to the police by neighbours.
"It it believed he had tortured the victim for a lengthy period before taking her to hospital," Corporal Damaris Gwendo had told the magistrate as quoted by K24.
Gwendo said that the woman sustained serious injuries on her right leg and hand, and was later transfered to the Nairobi Women Hospital and later the Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is in the High Dependency Unit.
Ombulu is expected back in court on Thursday to take his plea, seven days after his first arraignment, though the prosecution had sought 10 days for conclusion of investigations.
