Focused and unbowed, Deputy President William Ruto's Gusii team is slowly waging a formidable anti-campaign against Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i in Kisii and Nyamira Counties.
For every gathering organised by Matiang'i's team, Tanga Tanga brigade has also planned counter rallies, hiking political temperatures in the region.
On Sunday, Pro-Matiang'i team led by Governor John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, pitched tent at Nyamira PAG where they pushed for Abagusii unity.
The team also featured Solicitor General Ken Ogeto, who said that the country was ripe for Dr Matiang'i's leadership, adding that census exercise should be taken seriously.
But speaking miles away, a team of Tanga Tanga led by Kitutu Masaba MP Shadrack Mose, Kisii DG Joash Maangi, MP Alfa Miruka, Sylvanus Osoro and Ezekiel Mochogu, pitched tent in South Mugirango.
At the event, the team rallied behind DP William Ruto, arguing that he had demonstrated to the region that he's a true performer given his output.
"We cannot be cowed. The DP has spearheaded many development projects in Nyamira and Kisii. It's time for us to support him for our own good," said Mr Mose.
On his part, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro said Dr Matiang'i does not have support base which can enable him sail through in 2022 polls.
"Let's stop cheating ourselves. Our number is very minimal. DP Ruto has real chances of taking over. We should position ourselves to be in his government. The Matiang'i euphoria should not carry us away," he said.
Despite numerous meetings to bring the team together, Dr Matiang'i has struggled to tame them. Dr Ruto has visited the region for combined 20 trips.
