Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson now says his government is poised to plant five million trees during the short rains in a bid to conserve the environment.

He said it aims to ensure that the county achieves 10 per cent forest cover and also protect water catchment areas.

“As a county government, we are committed to improving our forest cover which is now below 10 per cent and that why in the last season of long rains we planted 13 million trees,” said Uasin Gishu governor. 

The tree planting exercise will be planted in forests, learning institutions, homesteads among others.

Speaking to the press after planting trees at Kapseret Forest on Tuesday,  Mandago said it is the responsibility of every Kenyan to plant trees.

“Kenyans should know that conserving environment its an individual and not government role, therefore, every Kenyan should plant trees,” added Uasin Gishu Governor.

Julius Kamau, the head of conservancy at the forest who was also present said Kenya Forest Service (KFS) will work with the Kapseret community to establish an eco-lodge at Kapsaret Forest whose proceeds will benefit the residents.

He, however, called on Kenyans to conserve the environment by planting more trees noting that Kenyans should sacrifice for the better future.

He reiterated that as KFS and the county government have a daunting task of conserving the forest and other natural resources.
