A veteran athlete and chairperson of central rift branch of Athletics Kenya (AK), Abraham Kipyego Mutai has called on the Ministry of Sports under CS Amina Mohammed to step in in the renovation of Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret which has stalled.
The stadium is expected to host the trials of Tokyo Olympic games scheduled for June 19 to 21 yet it is in an incomplete state with only four months left.
The sickening view of tall grass, poor drainage, uncompleted works and pathetic toilets have forced the athletes to train at Moi University-Annex Campus and University of Eldoret track which are already crowded since the institutions are open.
Mutai said that the opportunity was accorded to Eldoret which is famously known as the City of Champions since people turn out in large numbers whenever there is an athletics event compared to Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani where fans turn out in small numbers killing the morale of the athletes.
"It's a golden opportunity for Eldoret to be awarded a chance to hold the Olympics trials and this is because athletics fans would find it easy to come to Eldoret. I would like to urge the Ministry of Sports to consider working on the facility in the remaining five months,” said Mutai as quoted.
