ODM leader Raila Odinga and his deputy Hassan Joho on Sunday were given a thunderous reception in Elgeyo-Marakwet, a home turf of DP William Ruto.
Mr Odinga and Joho were accompanied by Senate Minority Leader James Orengo and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo. They were in Marakwet West.
The team was ushered in by Governor Alex Tolgos and Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny, whose mother-in-law Ruth Kiptoo was retiring.
On his Twitter account, Raila hailed the people of Elgeyo-Marakwet for the thunderous reception, adding that he was encouraged by messages given during the function.
"Visited the people of Elgeyo Marakwet and was encouraged by their well thought out ideas on the way forward for all of us as a people. Asanteni," he wrote.
Governor Tolgos, who ditched DP William Ruto, had on Saturday vowed to usher in Raila, whom he campaigned against in 2017 polls.
“I have received the invite and I will personally be there to welcome the former prime minister,” said Mr Tolgos.
Elgeyo-Marakwet ODM chairman Micah Kigen said they were ready to welcome Mr Odinga in Mr Ruto’s backyard, noting his visit was the continuation of the Building Bridges campaign that started with the March 9, 2018 handshake.
“One of his core responsibilities as a key partner in the handshake with the President is to explain to the people the reason why togetherness and cohesion are the most important things we currently need in the country,” said Mr Kigen.
Several MCAs and residents turned up during the function that was held at Chebara Primary School. Mr Odinga limited his speech to Building Bridges Initiative.
