National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has supported the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on the withdrawal of security details of Members of Parliament facing criminal charges.
Muturi, on Tuesday, said that Parliament will not provide the lawmakers with security as well following the declaration from the national government.
Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen had asked Parliament to consider protecting the lawmakers whose bodyguards were withdrawn.
The affected leaders include Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri.
While referring to Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) Act, Muturi said that provision of security for leaders is not among the duties given to the house. He insisted that parliament is not ready to protect leaders who engage in criminal activities using tax payers funds.
“Read the PSC Act, which they quoted, to see what it says about the responsibilities of the PSC in regard to members’ security,” Muturi said.
The directive to withdraw security detail of different leaders has already started to cause uproar from different quarters.
Some of the leaders have now claimed that the move is politically instigated after it emerged that most of the affected leaders are allied to DP Ruto except Babu Owino.
