South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro maintains that Abagusii community cannot produce a formidable candidate in presidential polls in 2022.
For months now, a section of leaders from both Nyamira and Kisii Counties have been backing Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i for the big seat, even though he's yet to declare.
During the burial of Dr Hezron Manduku last month, a host of leaders asked ODM leader Raila Odinga to consider supporting Dr Matiang'i for the top seat.
"You don't need to tell me that. Matiang'i is like my son but for now, allow him to work. We don't want early campaigns like the other side. When that time comes, we shall see what to do," he said.
On Sunday, Matiang'i, who attended the burial of entrepreneur Stephen Mogeni in Nyamira, also steered clearly off the day's politics despite calls to have him contest.
But Mr Sylvanus Osoro insists that Dr Matiang'i is not ready for the big task, arguing that the numbers of Abagusii community is too small to win.
"He comes from my constituency but he has never told me he wants to run. He can't win anyway because our number is too small to start with," he said on Wednesday.
"Let him use the current position he holds to help our youths get jobs and development. After all, the Abagusii people should support Dr William Ruto."
The DP has been traversing Gusii region which could be having almost 1.5 million voters by 2022. On Tuesday, he hosted Nyamira youths at his Karen home.
