According to statistics by the Ministry of Health, over 400 maternal deaths were registered in Nakuru last year.

Furthermore, statistics show that most women in the county do not go for regular antenatal clinics hence complicating matters.

Speaking at Nakuru town over the weekend, Health Permanent Secretary (PS) Khadija Kassachoon said that maternal deaths remain a challenge in many counties.

She noted that despite measures taken by the government including waiving on maternity fees, most pregnant mothers still fail to go for checkups.

“Maternal deaths are still in many counties for instance at least 400 cases of maternal death were reported in Nakuru last year,” said Kassachoon.

Kassachoon blamed perceptions and cultural beliefs saying they have impacted negatively on the fight against maternal mortality.

Kassachoon, however, said the government will continue to draft measures aimed at curbing the deaths.

She said sensitisation programmes are being carried out across the country educating pregnant mothers on the importance of antenatal clinics.

Last week, First Lady Margret Kenyatta presented the Beyond Zero Mobile clinic to Nakuru county urging pregnant mothers to go for regular checkups.
