Motorists will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets for using the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit road.
This is after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced recommendations for motorists to be charged for using the road.
The new recommendations will see motorists pay between Sh1,458 and Sh7,290 in toll charges.
KeNHA director-general Peter Mundinia said they will start charging motorists for using other roads after evaluating the success of Nairobi-Nakuru road.
Mundinia further revealed that motorists who will be using the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Westlands expressway will also be charged.
The Nairobi-Nakuru road which is a 243km stretch will see high-capacity vehicles like transit lorries pay Sh30 per kilometre while low-capacity vehicles will part with Sh6 per kilometre.
“The first in line and whose procurement has progressed well are Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau summit Expressway and Nairobi Expressway (JKIA to James Gichuru Road). Others will come after evaluating the success of the above two,” said Mundinia in an interview with a local daily.
The director-general, however, said the recommendations have not yet been approved by the Transport Secretary.
If approved, motorists will be charged once construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau summit Expressway and JKIA-Westlands Expressway are complete.
Construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau summit Expressway has already started and will cost Sh180 billion while JKIA-Westlands Expressway which is yet to start will cost Sh50 billion.
