Terror suspect Salim Aboud Khalid alias Survivor who was shot and seriously injured when officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) ambushed him in his hiding place in Tudor, Mombasa has requested the court to free him so as to undergo a surgery.
The operation that led to the apprehension of the suspect was conducted on the wee hours of September 11, 2019.
Khalid through his lawyer Yussuf Aboubakar pleaded with a Mombasa court to be freed so as to seek medical attention.
“The suspect suffered broken arms and limb. He needs a specialized gadget for operation but the family cannot assist him because he is in custody. We urge the court to grant him bond so that he can be assisted to have the operation done,” Mr Aboubakar stated as quoted by The Nation.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti was also notified by the lawyer that the pieces of evidence including mobile phones that were taken by the detectives did not tie the suspect to any criminal activities.
“There is no single shred of evidence linking the suspect to terror group and the three offences he is facing. The police have returned the phones and report on the forensic analysis of the gadgets. It has no iota of evidence against the accused. I have been told to sign it,” the lawyer noted.
Salim Aboud Khalid is suspected to be a member of the Al-Shabaab terror group. He has also been accused of obstructing a police officer, constable Edapal Lowasa , from carrying out his duty by attacking him with a knife.
Apparently, Khalid who is believed to have links to several countries including Syria and Somalia has been on the police radar since June last year when his name was placed on the list of most wanted criminals.
The court will issue a directive on whether to release Khalid on bond or not on November 1.
