Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed announced on January 22, 2020, that the ongoing renovations at Nyayo stadium are set to be completed in March, as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
She stated that the contractor has given an assurance that the facelift will be completed before the due month so that the stadium can host international sporting events.
CS Amina regretted that the renovations had slagged since 2016 and it was hectic for passersby, but did not give a reason behind it.
“We want to ensure that this facility is readily available for use by our sportsmen and women because it has become an eyesore for Kenyans who pass here every day. These works have to be completed by the end of March. The contractor has agreed to adhere to that directive,” said Amina.
The CS also pointed out that Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani is undergoing assessment for possible renovations ahead of World Athletics Under-20 Championship scheduled for July and the Safari Rally.
Amina said that the two major stadiums were prioritised because they will host the international events but the other stadiums in the country will also be renovated.
Matters football, CS Amina said that they will write to FIFA, a governing body of world football, to settle the complaints of coach Adel Amrouche who was awarded Sh108 million and coach Bobby Williamson awarded sh55 million by FIFA after suing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for wrongful dismissal.
"We have received communication on the matter and we will be going to Zurich to tackle all these issues that have been raised,” she said as quoted.
Failure to settle the dues can lead to the disqualification of Harambee Stars in the world cup qualifiers.
