"To my family members, I want us to be strong. We have to be strong for her, " he said.

He didn't show any strain of emotion when he spoke, living up to his own call for those close to the late governor to be strong for her. What scores of Kenyans perhaps do not know is how the two lovebirds met before they fell in love and went on to tie the knot as husband and wife.

In an exclusive interview in 2015 with KTN's Sophia Wanuna, the then Sotik Member of Parliament revealed how he met Dr Edwin Abonyo.

The two met in Kipsigis after Joyce Laboso had finished university and went to work as a teacher at Kipsigis Girls' School. Abonyo was then working in the tea industry.

"It was after that when I came back when I was in Kipsigis Girls' School, that is around the time, you know, one thing led to another and, you know, before we knew it, we were married, " Dr Joyce Laboso said. (6:48-6:59)

Dr Edwin Abonyo ethnic extraction is Luo, something that complicates his wife's political ambitions as her opponents used her marriage to paint her as an outsider.

The two have three children who are all adults.
