Former Nairobi Education minister Janet Ouko has expressed her views on charity given to students saying that a country cannot educate its people through charity.
She argued that most students get their self esteem lowered in the process of going around seeking for bursary while some leaders use the opportunity to gain political mileage.
In an interview at Citizen TV on Monday Ouko argued that, instead of depending on charity, the government should chip in by making it easier for parents to get their children to school.
One of the things that she condemned is the act of imposing high cost of uniform on parents saying that it does not make sense for a parent to buy uniform on a budget of Sh17,000.
"I have a strong opinion against bursary because we cannot educate our people through charity. We cannot use bursary to gain political mileage. Let us make it easy for parents to get children to school. Imposing high uniform costs on parents is ridiculous," Ouko said.
Her sentiments come in the wake of reports that a sizable number of 2019 KCPE candidates are yet to join Form One despite positing good results due to financial constraints.
