Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament Richard Onyonka has claimed that the country is headed towards bankruptcy and has no money left to run its operations.

Speaking on Wednesday, the lawmaker said that that is to the widespread corruption, the government has no money left to operate, after recurrent losses to the corrupt.

He added that similarly, more money is being repaid as loans, which leaves the country with notting, at a time when the national debt is said to be approaching Sh6 trillion.

"Tumekopa hadi imefika kiwango sasa hatuna hela (we have taken so much debt to an extent that we no longer have money)," said the third term Ford Kenya parliamentarian.

Onyonka spoke in an interview on Radio Citizen's Mjadala Wa Citizen, where he claimed that the only money in the Kenyan coffers now will soon be ending up in loan repayments.

"Pesa zetu zote ni za kulipa na kulipa madeni (all the money we have is being used for loan repayments)," he added.

Since he came to power in 2013, president Uhuru Kenyatta's government hsd been under criticism over its good appetite for debt, most of it acquired from outside.

Th same was repeatedly defended by former National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich who said that the debt, most of which is owed to China, is manageable.
